Claims he didn't send any Spurs players off in the game they finally lost out on the title to Leicester because he didn't want to be blamed for their failings. So basically admitting that he didn't want to do his job properly because he didn't want to look bad (not that I'm bothered by the outcome, but what a cunt)

Mark Clattenburg booked nine Tottenham players against Chelsea in 2016 - the most yellow cards ever handed to one team in a Premier League match

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg says he "allowed Tottenham to self-destruct" when he refereed the 2-2 draw with Chelsea in May 2016 as Spurs conceded the title to Leicester.

Spurs needed to beat Chelsea to retain any hope of winning the league.

Clattenburg says he "went in with a gameplan" so he could not be blamed by Tottenham for losing the title.

He booked nine Spurs players in the bad-tempered match, but now says he could have sent off three players.

Chelsea and Tottenham received record fines from the Football Association following the game, while Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele was banned for six games for violent conduct against Chelsea's Diego Costa.

Speaking to NBC's Men in Blazers podcast, he said: "I allowed them [Spurs] to self-destruct so all the media, all the people in the world went: 'Tottenham lost the title.'

"If I sent three players off from Tottenham, what are the headlines? 'Clattenburg cost Tottenham the title.' It was pure theatre that Tottenham self-destructed against Chelsea and Leicester won the title."

Asked if he helped to "script" the game, he replied: "I helped the game. I certainly benefited the game by my style of refereeing.

"Some referees would have played by the book; Tottenham would have been down to seven or eight players and probably lost and they would've been looking for an excuse.

"But I didn't give them an excuse, because my gameplan was: Let them lose the title."

Clattenburg took charge of the Euro 2016 final, as well as that year's Champions League and FA Cup finals.

In February, he left his job as a Premier League official to become Saudi Arabia's new head of referees.

Clattenburg says he had to change his style of refereeing when he took charge of European matches.

"The English style of refereeing is different," he added.

"I had to referee differently when I went into Europe because none of the top players in Europe would accept some of the physical contact that went on in the Premier League - but that was the theatre, that's what people loved.

"They love a tackle, they don't want it punished."

Shows the character of the scum that carry whistles at Premier league games. And he was regarded by his masters as one of the better ones and given the big finals
The FA Integrity unit should contact the police and have him arrested for match fixing.

I imagine the Sharia punishment for fraud is unpleasant, and this admission will acceptable as evidence if he ever does anything like this in his new job.

I though we'd heard the last of this seething ball of ego and self aggrandising ink.
What a total nobb not to even think about calming the situation down and even protecting players from hot heads who had lost it. someone could have got seriously injured - yes I know it was only the spuds & chavs but still.

I've never really thought that much of clattenberg and could never understand how he came to be rated so highly, but I just find this admission astonishing. It's really an admission of handling a game in a way that isn't impartial or in accordance with the law s of the game - one red card could have shaken Spurs up and changed their entire approach, yet his idea was essentially 'give them enough rope to hang themselves'. And he words it like he made that choice before the game started

I can't actually think of a single ref now where I see their name on match day and think 'oh good we've got him this week'.

What is highlighted is that Clattenburg admits to being deliberately inconsistent in that in another game in the PL he would have had no problem giving yellows out for further fouls by players.

Not only that though because he also explained how he reffed games in Europe differently to PL games because the English like to see more [ foul ] tackles compared to their continental counterparts.

There are 2 aspects for refereeing:

1. Application of the law.
2. Game management.

The Clattenburg ego got in the way...he has completely undermined his own integrity and credibility.

This whole interview is a post facto rationalisation ,attempting to justify his bottling the sendings off. Fucking disgrace whe one considers the fucked up reffing we had to put up with during that period ie. six game changing wrong decisions on the bounce including an overturned sending off by Clattenberg himself.
